Escalator Cleaning
Our escalator cleaning crew uses unique purpose-built escalator cleaning equipment and well-rehearsed cleaning procedures to guarantee that the tread, risers, and uprights on escalators are thoroughly cleaned and that any potentially hazardous grit or debris has been eliminated. We clean escalator steps, hand rails and structural trusses as well as step chains and top and bottom platforms.
The treads and risers of the escalator are washed and dried, leaving them clean, dry, and ready for immediate usage without the need of dismantling the escalator beforehand.

Why is Escalator Cleaning Important?
Escalators are a common sight in a broad variety of buildings, including hotels, office complexes, public libraries, and shopping centres, to name just a few of the possible locations. In the professional cleaning industry most wouldn’t give escalators a lot of thought, but the people who live in the building certainly do. You have almost certainly heard that the flooring of a building is the first thing that people see when they enter that building. In most cases, this is because they are looking down in order to protect themselves. In addition to this, they often base their evaluation of a facility on the condition of the floor.
The same may be said for moving escalators. When riding an escalator, you should look down sometimes for your own safety, and a lot of individuals keep doing it the whole way through the ride. If the escalator is dirty, unclean, or covered in dust, it may provide a negative impression of the facility to the people who live in the building. If the impression that consumers receive of a place depends heavily on how clean the escalators are, what can we do to keep them that way?

The Challenges of Escalator Cleaning
- Night cleaning: Escalators must always be cleaned late at night after a facility is closed, and they must be clean and working when the facility reopens in the morning. This is a requirement.
- Escalators are not flat. Some people who work in the cleaning industry have attempted to clean escalators by dry mopping or wet mopping them as if they were level floors. It is possible that this will work to remove a spill or some soiling, but it will not work to clean the escalator in a comprehensive manner.
- Grooves. The steps of an escalator have grooves in them to increase the user’s sense of security. These, however, also gather dirt and dust. In a manner analogous to the grout that surrounds the tile, dirt and moisture may get trapped in the grooves, and the longer they are allowed to remain there, the more difficult it is to remove them.
- Length of Grooves. Because the length of the grooves may change, each particular escalator may provide its own special set of issues when it comes to keeping it clean.
In spite of the fact that these concerns could make proper escalator cleaning more difficult, we must keep in mind that there is a solution.
Our Escalator Cleaning Procedure
Cleaning escalators used to involve removing the steps, transporting them somewhere else to be pressure washed, waiting for them to dry, and then replacing them where they originally belonged. This was an efficient method, but it required a lot of time and, as a consequence, it was expensive. There are several types of escalators that still need the step-by-step cleaning of each individual step. This method is not nearly as efficient, not to mention that it is a tedious and laborious procedure.
Many commercial cleaning companies employ what is often known as an automated escalator cleaning system in their day-to-day operations. They are sometimes referred to as “hands-off” cleaning systems. We follow the adaptation of ISSA’s cleaning process in the cleaning of escalators, usually involving the following steps:
- Installing a Cleaning System – a cleaning system is installed at the bottom of the escalator while the escalator itself is turned off.
- Safety First – We place a safety cone at the bottom of the escalator
- Cleaning Equipment – We place a cleaning head at the top of the escalator. We then use a special purpose vacuum collecting dirt and debris that has accumulated on the stairs.
- Additional Equipment – We use brushes and pads to loosen and remove dirt that has been embedded in the treads.
- Microbial Cleaning – Escalators are extremely prone to the collection of germs and bacteria. Handrails of escalators in particular are high touch point areas. To remedy this we use microbial cleaning techniques.
